Where did the breath go?..

I have been practicing yoga for many years and have been teaching for close to 6.  Some teachers give importance to the breath at the outset of the practice and at the end, in savasana.  Others, very little at all.  Among the best teachers, the breath is always given its importance throughout. It is the foundation of the practice.   During the practice, the breath is mentioned with phrases such as, “Breathe slow and steady,” “Stay with your breath,” “Take 2 more breaths,” “On your next inhale come back to centre.”

I know that students all have their own breathing rate, and sometimes, I hesitate to give as much direction as I do to the inhale and exhale.  (I give more directions than any teacher I have ever had.)  The reason is simple.  It is the connection to the breath and the benefits this connection has given me personally in my practice,  that has convinced me of the importance of helping my students stay connected.  Keeping the students safe and keeping them connected are the most important things about teaching yoga.

I give the cue inhale, exhale softly, throughout so that it is a guide for you.  If you happen to be following another rhythm, that is no problem at all of course.  But hearing the words, inhale and exhale in the background, I hope is helpful.

Breathing fully not only on the mat but off the mat, is a gift to your well-being and health.  It has taken me years to understand the importance of this statement.

Next week’s post…” Switch to the PNS with the breath for better health, balance and centredness.”

Any comments?

Welcome to the DOWNdog Yoga 30-Day Sun Salutation Challenge

Your DOWNdog Monday Morning POST

Welcome to the DOWNdog Yoga 30-Day Sun Salutation Challenge!  I hope you will want to participate and find it both challenging and FUN!

….

I started doing Sun Salutations regularly during the summer.  At first, it was a few times a week.  In September I started doing them more and more and they soon became a part of my daily practice.   I have to say in all honesty,  I am now hooked.

The question is: How do I get you to go over to your mat  every day for 30 days and do sun salutations? Well I don’t think there is an easy answer to this question.  But, I will  try to get you off to a good start for *Week One.

A few years back when talking to my son about a friend of mine who was having a hard time going back to her daily meditation routine,  he gave me some good advice.   “Tell her to just start.  Start small.  Five minutes a day. “

I decided to use this  advice and so we will start off slow.  One sun salutation for 7 days.  Every day.  If you do one a day or more, you will be off to a great start! Doing them at the same time will help you develop the habit.

They say it takes 30 consecutive days to develop a new habit and it is for this reason that I have decided to make it a 30-day challenge.

Our habits to some degree dictate the direction of our life.  We can chose to develop new and healthier habits and give our life a better direction at any time.  Starting slowly, one day at a time is the key.

I believe beyond any doubt, that if you develop the habit of doing sun salutations, they  will bring more energy, focus, and calm into your daily life.  They will help you become more flexible and stronger, both mentally and physically.  They will do just what they say: bring the beautiful energy of the sun into your life.  Who knows? They might just take your life in a new direction.

Please note: To make it a little bit more fun and motivating, I would like to offer everyone who does 21 days or more of Sun Salutations during the 30-day challenge, a chance to win a gift certficate for the upcoming winter session at DOWNdog Yoga!

Namaste!

The DOWNdog Brand!

When I was reading about starting up my own yoga studio, it was strongly recommended that I have a brand.  Something that distinguishes my classes from others.

Classes at Downdog are not unlike other yoga classes in most ways.  Yoga classes are all designed to help you relax, gain better alignment, more mindfulness and increased flexibility. Ultimately, they aim to bring you to stillness in savasana.  So what distinguishes classes at Downdog from other yoga classes –besides being a home studio?
I would have to say the importance I give to empowerment.  I have given my brand a name: FARE YOGA

 Flexibility; Alignment; Relaxation; Empowerment.

Classes at Downdog are designed to help you restore flexibility, become more aware of your alignment, help you relax and also, very importantly, empower you.

I believe empowerment to be one of the most important benefits of yoga.

What exactly is empowerment?  It is having the fire-in-the-belly kind of feeling.  It’s having a strong and balanced Manipura chakra.  (The Manipura chakra is the third chakra or energy centre along the spine and is located near the navel.)

When outside events, people or circumstances add unwanted stress to your life, empowerment can help you remain more calm, more centered.  You have a stronger belief in your own power.  You have greater self-esteem.
Empowerment has nothing to do with ego.  It is the opposite.  When you are empowered,  you feel a strong connection with yourself, and it is this connection that draws you closer to people and to the world around you.

When we begin a practice, we chant the Ohm to remind us of the connection we have with all people and living things. Connection, being part of the whole, is an important part of the yoga philosophy.  It moves us away from the ego, which is at the source of our unhappiness.

Yoga has helped me feel more powerful,  both physically and mentally.  This empowerment has helped me handle life with greater  focus, calm, and confidence.   It is one of the reasons I am so passionate about yoga.   Empowerment is at the root of the passion I share with my students.

Poses such as Boat, Plank, One-Arm Plank, Low Plank,  Chair, High Lunge, Crescent Lunge, Crow, Fish, Shoulder Stand, Warrior 1, Warrior 2. 3 are empowering.  They strengthen your core, spine, torso, arms, shoulders, legs.  But they also strengthen your mind and your heart.  They are always an important  part of the sequences I create.

On a final note,  a feeling of empowerment gives you a greater sense of well-being.   You see life in a more positive light!

Namaste!

“Baby it’s hot outside!”
Trying to beat the summer heat? This week’s yoga practice will do just that.  Altghough it may seem counterintuitive,  you can actually cool down your body with asanas that both help restore and rejuvenate your body!
The practice will begin with relaxation in supine butterfly pose.  Deep controlled and relaxed breathing will not only help you slow down your heart rate, it will relax your body and reduce body temperature.
Water and earth mudra will be used to further cool us down.
Our practice will stay away from sun salutations which create heat and focus rather on  poses such as mountain, upward mountain, low lunge, low lunge with a twist, cobra, up dog.
We will use child, Warrior 2, thunderbolt, extensions, butterfly, squats, boat  and head-to-toe to ground ourselves in the present moment.

A grounding/heart opening practice is cooling not only physically but mentally.  It helps us to let go and to focus on the present moment (be less scattered, more centered).  Cool is the rule when we are able to surrender to the present and welcome whatever the future holds.  Trusting that the only place we need to be is in the present moment with our breath is one of the important lessons yoga can teach us.  When we achieve this, our practice becomes mindful and meditative.

Focus poses for this week:
Tadasana: Mountain
Urdhva Mukha Svanasana: Upward Facing Dog

Stay cool,

Jocelyne

“I knew that would be cheating”
The renovation for the studio was to begin in June, 2017.  I had been thinking of opening my own studio for a few months. In June, I backed out.  I made up all kinds of excuses to not go ahead.  Foremost,  (like the Iowa farmer, Ray Kinsella, in Field of Dreams who questioned whether or not he should pursue his dream of building a baseball diamond on his farm) I questioned myself, “Will students come?”

My dream of opening a studio stayed in the background of my mind through June and July.  And then, on August 9th, I read an article in the Globe and Mail about Kyle Miller. The article spoke directly to me. It was about defying the odds and about the importance of pursuing your dreams.
*******
The following is a quote from the Globe and Mail, August 9th, 2017 about Kyle Miller.  The article began,

“When he tees up Thursday with his eye on history, he won’t be thinking of the rusty putter he found in the family garage, the childhood link to the game he believes saved his life. He won’t be thinking either of the kindly teaching pro who took him in or the 14 surgeries he underwent to rebuild his left hand and rotate his left leg, operations that left him with permanent numbness along the left side of his body.

Instead, Kyle Miller’s thoughts will be as honed as a scalpel’s edge: head down, alignment set. Ready on the downswing for his body to shift to its numbed side. Finish in a position he describes as a matter “of trust and commitment to the shot.” (italics mine)

It is how Miller has made himself into a defying force – the first golfer with cerebral palsy to compete at a PGA Tour-sanctioned event.”

******
It was when I read this article that I decided, after months of hesitation, to go forward “with trust and commitment to the shot”: creating a beautiful, warm and welcoming space in my home for students to practice yoga. I never looked back.  I knew that if I didn’t go ahead, and chose to let my fear win, that would be cheating.  It would not be true to the spirit of the conquering yoga warrior.
I cannot put in words, the energy that has been fuelled inside as I pursue my dream and let go of my fear.   It is an energy, I believe, that is in all of us.
It is my hope that the yoga practices at Downdogyoga will bring you positive energy, an energy that is “honed as a scalpel’s edge: …alignment set.”  Most importantly, I hope this space will provide you with a space to find stillness in the fast-paced world we live in.
On a final note, I would like once again, express my gratitude to all of you who have supported me in the pursuit of this dream.
Cheers,
Jocelyne
